One of the most common complaints made by viewers of BBC 's Gardeners' World is that there's simply too much birdsong in the scenes filmed in Monty Don's garden at Longmeadow. But, the veteran gardener revealed, it's all absolutely genuine.

Speaking on the latest edition of the Gardeners' World podcast , Monty explains that many viewers just can't believe that the birds in his garden are so talkative: "We've had a number of letters along the lines of, 'I watch Gardeners' World and I really enjoy it, but it's spoiled for me by the fact that you impose this bird song which is so unrealistic and so over the top... why don't you just record the natural sounds?'

"And the answer is; 'I hate to disappoint you, but that is the natural sound'."
