GREENVILLE, S.C. —
A powerful tribute is set to be unveiled Saturday honoring a beloved educator who shaped generations of students at an all-Black school in Greenville.
Greenville’s Washington Elementary and High School was an all-Black school created to address the overcrowding of other black schools in the area. Although the school only operated for nine years, alumni said it transformed their lives, and they want to honor the legacy of the man who led the charge, Principal J. Wilbur Walker.
To honor Walker’s legacy, alumni will unveil a portrait of Mr. Walker on June 7 during a ceremony at Gethsemane Baptist Church, followed by a presentation at the Greenville Transit Authority, now located on the former school grounds.
