COLUMBUS, Ohio — A former Franklin County deputy pleaded guilty in federal on Friday to depriving an inmate of his civil rights.

According to Acting United States Attorney Kelly Norris for the Southern District of Ohio, 28-year-old Matthew Carey admitted to depriving an individual of their right to be free from a deputy's deliberate indifference to a substantial risk of serious harm while acting under color of law.

Court documents say that in March 2022, Carey intentionally told an inmate, Gmier McCall, about another inmate's pending charge of rape of a minor.

Carey knew that sharing details about the inmate's rape charge would create a substantial risk that he would be assaulted by others in the jail. The inmate charged with rape was assaulted by other inmates.
