TOLEDO, Ohio — June 6 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and local organizations are teaming up to emphasize the importance of responsible gun ownership - especially when it comes to protecting children and families.

Melissa Lanier, Childhood & Youth Wellness Manager at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, told WTOL 11 the department is encouraging residents to wear orange, a color associated with hunter safety, to show support for gun safety awareness.

To help prevent firearm-related injuries and deaths, the health department is partnering with the Toledo VA Outpatient Clinic to distribute free gun locks. The goal is to promote safe firearm storage and prevent avoidable tragedies through community education.
