MANSFIELD, La. -- The DeSoto Parish School Board on Thursday recognized the "extraordinary legacy" of public service to education and the community exhibited by one of its former board members by dedicating the Central Office meeting room in his honor.

The late Louis James (L.J.) Mayweather Jr. faithfully served on the DeSoto Parish School Board for four decades, from 1980 to 2020, making him the longest-serving board member in the district’s history. He died in April 2020 while being treated for COVID-19.

During the dedication ceremony Thursday, Superintendent Clay Corley, current board members, and members of the Mayweather family gathered to unveil a commemorative plaque and reflect on Mayweather's lifelong commitment to students, families, and the advancement of education in DeSoto P
