TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A first-of-its-kind inmate comfort care program has launched in Leon County to help detainees who are terminally ill and are “facing their final days in custody,” according to the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and Big Bend Hospice.

The inpatient hospice room is expected to be located within the Leon County Detention Facility and will allow patients to move from the general population once they “have a prognosis of less than one week to live” and are no longer able to walk, LCSO and Big Bend Hospice wrote in a press release Friday.

Specifically, the hospice room will allow family members to visit their loved ones in a private setting, far away from their regular cell, the press release revealed.
