INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A state lawmaker said a Congressional proposal to freeze state-level AI regulations would wipe out existing rules on deepfakes and other uses.
The federal budget bill includes a provision that would prohibit the states from enforcing any laws or rules governing artificial intelligence for 10 years.
Rep. Matt Pierce, D-Bloomington, who has worked on AI and cybersecurity issues in the Indiana General Assembly, said that move would prevent states from acting on the progress they’ve already made. For example, Indiana lawmakers this spring passed a law to bar police from relying solely on facial recognition technology to identify a suspect in an eyewitness lineup.
