INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On the 81st anniversary of D-Day, a new exhibit at the Indiana War Memorial tells the story of the USS Indiana (BB-58) and its important role in World War II.
Just after 3:30 a.m. on June 6, 1944, D-Day began. It was the first day of the Allied invasion of France and marked a turning point in World War II.
The invasion, codenamed Operation Overlord, saw more than 160,000 troops from countries including the U.S. the United Kingdom and Canada land along a stretch of heavily-fortified coastline in Normandy, France.
More than 4,400 Allied troops were killed on D-Day with nearly 6,000 troops wounded or missing. The sacrifices made that day laid the foundation for the Allied defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
