AUSTIN (KXAN) — June is recognized as LGBTQ+ Pride month, commemorating the historic Stonewall Riots in New York, which marked a pivotal moment in the gay rights movement in the late 1960s and early 70s.

Though the city of Austin doesn’t host its official Pride celebration until August, there are several community events and celebrations in and around Austin honoring the LGBTQ+ community throughout the month of June.

Earlier this week, Travis County leaders hosted the Fifth Annual Pride Flag Raising Ceremony at the Travis County Administrative Building, raising a Progress Pride Flag to fly outside the building for the month.
