TYLER, Texas (KETK) - As many children and families hit the pools and splash pads over the summer, safety should on parents' minds as their children have fun while cooling off from the Texas heat.

"Do some homework about the pool itself," said Ginger Points, environmental health director for the Northeast Texas Public Health District.

Points advised that parents should teach their children how to swim as early as possible to prevent their risk of drowning.

"As soon as they start walking and toddling around then they could be a risk for drowning in an unprotected pool," Points added.

If you're taking your children to a public pool or even to a private one, Points stated that it's critical that patents should always keep an eye on their children.
