MONTREAL - A looming transit strike threatens to disrupt bus and metro services in Montreal starting Monday. The strike, involving the city’s maintenance workers, could lead to reduced or eliminated service outside of peak hours from June 9 to 17.
Montreal's transit agency is urging residents to consider alternative transportation methods. They recommend walking, biking, or working from home if possible. The agency's 2,400 maintenance workers are advocating for improved working conditions, which has led to the potential strike.
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante expressed her hope for a swift resolution to the labor dispute. She stated, "I’m hoping for a quick solution to the labour dispute," emphasizing the importance of maintaining public transit services for the community.
Despite the anticipated disruptions, regular transit service will continue during the Canadian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place in Montreal from next Friday to Sunday. The city is preparing for the event while also managing the potential impact of the strike on daily commuters.
