TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department has issued an urgent public health advisory after detecting elevated levels of E. coli in Swan Creek and its tributaries.

The advisory affects areas from Eastgate to the Maumee River, including popular recreational spots such as Swan Creek Metropark, Highland Park, Sterling Park and Boeschenstein Park.

The advisory followed a Notice of Violation (NOV) issued by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz on Thursday, June 5. The NOV cited multiple sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) events across Toledo, including discharges affecting Swan Creek, Delaware Creek, and Heilman Ditch.
