The Missoula Police Department announced the lockdown at Hellgate High School was lifted Friday afternoon after responding to an overheard threat by a student on campus Friday.

Police are still investigating the incident to determine the nature and credibility of the threat.

"We appreciate the response of patrol and the cooperation of Hellgate staff, students, and families as we continue our efforts to ensure safety and gather accurate information," an MPD press release said.

Hellgate High School was briefly put on lockdown with students and staff to remain in place in an “abundance of caution” as police investigate the nature of the threat and investigate those involved, according to an earlier MPD press release.
