Chants of "Education is a right that is why we've got to fight" rang out as a group of roughly 100 members of the Guilford County Association of Educators marched through downtown Greensboro calling for the Guilford County Commissioners to increase funding for public schools.
The march began at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at 315 Spring Garden Street and ended at 301 W. Market St., in front of the old County Courthouse where the commissioners were holding a public hearing on the 2025-26 budget.
Under the proposed budget drafted by County Manager Michael Halford, the county would increase funding for the school district by $2.5 million. That amount, Halford acknowledged at the last commissioners meeting, fell short of Superintendent Whitney Oakley's request for an additional $44 million in funding
