BERNIE, Mo. (WSIL) -- Police are mourning the loss of an officer who passed away in the line of duty.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control, on June 5, at 4:53 p.m., law enforcement responded to an address on West Crumb Avenue in Bernie for a domestic disturbance. State police said Bernie Lieutenant Eddie Mays, 58, died while trying to take a man into custody.

Jeremy Blagg, 36 of Bernie, was taken into custody by members with the Bernie Police Department, Stoddard County Sheriff's Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol for a domestic assault charge, state police reported.

State police said their initial investigation indicated Mays may have died as a result of complications from a medical condition, however, the official cause of death
