ROUND ROCK — Wimberley pitcher Ty Thames walked off the baseball field with a silver medal around his neck to a future that promises to be just as shiny.
Thames did everything he could during Friday morning's UIL Class 4A Division II state baseball championship at Dell Diamond, throwing fastballs that averaged 94 mph. In the end, though, Longview Spring Hill scratched for seven hits — all singles — and survived a seventh-inning rally by the Texans to win their first state baseball championship 5-3.
Trailing 5-1 entering the final inning, the Texans fought back and cut the margin to 5-3 on run-scoring singles by Wyatt Yeatter and Sage Hall. But with two runners aboard and two outs, Spring Hill reliever Cayden Rhodes struck out Wimberley's Cody Stoever to end it.
