Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris is "seriously considering" a run for U.S. Senate as a Democrat, potentially joining a growing field of contenders looking to challenge incumbent U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst.

"Our kids and families are stuck in the crosshairs of partisan politics," she said in a statement. "Depriving human beings access to critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP and treating people like bargaining chips is cruel. As a mom, community leader, school board member and small business owner, I cannot sit by."

In addition to serving on the school board, Norris is the president and owner of the Horizon Group.

She previously served as the CEO of Goodwill of Central Iowa. And she has a long history working on political campaigns, including those of former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack
