SALISBURY, N.C. — A section of I-85 in Salisbury will be dedicated to the first woman senator to represent North Carolina and Salisbury native, Elizabeth Dole.

Dole has had a storied career in public service.

Before she served as senator, she was Deputy to the Special Assistant for Consumer Affairs under Richard Nixon, U.S. Secretary of Transportation under Ronald Reagan and U.S. Secretary of Labor under George H. W. Bush.

Dole also notably served eight years as the president of the American Red Cross and founded a nonprofit supporting military families and spouses, Caring for Military Families: The Elizabeth Dole Foundation.

Dole was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom , the highest civilian honor, for her exceptional public service by President Joe Biden in 2024.
