ASHEBORO, N.C. — A quiet Monday morning turned into a moment of instinctive heroism for Quennie Rodriguez, a paralegal assistant working just steps from where a police chase ended in a violent crash.

All that’s left on North Cox Street is a skid mark, but what Rodriguez did in the aftermath is unforgettable.

“I heard one of the Hispanic ladies yelling for her baby in Spanish — ‘Mi bebé,’” Rodriguez recalled. “Something in me just clicked to go and help them.”

Rodriguez had been at her desk preparing files when a loud crash outside her window stopped her cold. She opened the back door and saw two mangled cars — and a mother crying out for her child.

Without thinking, she ran out.
