WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Mosquitos in West Monroe tested positive for two mosquito-borne illnesses that can be deadly to humans.
The Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement routinely collects mosquitoes to send to the LSU Diagnostic Laboratory to be tested for illnesses. The results from the most recent submission show that mosquitoes in West Monroe tested positive for the West Nile virus and St. Louis Encephalitis.
Mosquitos collected between First West Thrift Store and West Monroe High School tested positive for West Nile, and mosquitoes collected near Smith Street in Bawcomville tested positive for SLE.
All mosquito-borne illnesses, including the West Nile virus and SLE, require being bitten by an infected mosquito to contract the illness.
