MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Friday marks Gun Violence Awareness Day, which comes as Wear Orange Weekend kicks off.

Public Health Madison and Dane County will be participating in this initiative for a third year.

The color orange is meant to symbolize what hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.

Organizers said the goal is to spread awareness and build community to end gun violence.

“I’m proud to stand here not only as your chief of police for the City of Madison but also as a parent and member of our community who believes that every one of us has a role to play in preventing gun violence,” said Interim Madison Chief of Police John Patterson.

There will be a vigil and rally at the State Capitol on Saturday to honor those who have lost their lives to gun violence.
