MADISON (WKOW) — This weekend is a great time to pull out orange clothing to be a part of Wear Orange Weekend.

The weekend marks a time where people remember victims of gun violence.

It is also a part of a nationwide call to make gun safety a priority.

Gun violence is currently the leading cause of death for youth in America.

Interim Madison Police Chief John Patterson spoke about the importance of starting the change in your own home.

"We need to stop ignoring our realities. If we want to reduce gun violence, we must begin looking at what happens inside our homes," he said.

His call to action asked parents to equate gun safety to teaching kids about seat belts. He says by making the conversation commonplace it will help make gun safety normal too.
