Libertarian-leaning Republicans in the New Hampshire State House dropped their opposition to mandatory minimum sentences for fentanyl dealers Thursday in exchange for defelonizing possession of small amounts of magic mushrooms.
The deal breaks a years-long stalemate over drug sentencing laws.
For years, state Rep. Kevin Verville, of Deerfield, has tried to change policy around psilocybin, or magic mushrooms. The House on Thursday approved an amended bill that drops the first-offense charge for possessing three-quarters of an ounce or less of psilocybin mushrooms from a felony to a misdemeanor.
