A massive 6.7 magnitude earthquake has rocked Chile as buildings were shaken, walls collapsed and the emergency services battled to control the disaster.

The quake first hit Copiapo, a city in northern Chile , with the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) the first to report it at a shallow depth of 40 miles meaning that it will have been felt widely. There have been reports of power outages and evacuations there have not been any reports of casualties so far. ‌
