Another group of dedicated firefighters from Southern Manitoba has made the long journey north to assist with wildfire efforts near Cross Lake, as flames continue to threaten northern communities.

Members of the Winkler Fire Department, Altona/Rhineland Emergency Services (ARES), and Morris Fire Department were the latest teams to answer the call, departing Thursday morning for the nearly 900-kilometre trip to Cross Lake — a community located north of Norway House and part of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation.

“It was requested from the Office of the Fire Commissioner to look for equipment and members for structural protection,” explained ARES Chief Greg Zimmerman, who also leads the Pembina Triangle Mutual Aid District.
