EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — The question of who is in charge in the city of remains a question mark as the two people vying to replace the convicted former Mayor Brandon King await a court's decision.

Earlier this week, East Cleveland City Council President Lateek Shabazz filed a motion in the Eighth District Court of Appeals requesting that he be declared the city's mayor in the aftermath of the jury's verdict in King's case on May 29.

According to the motion, "King's conviction created a vacancy in the office of mayor, and pursuant to the East Cleveland Charter, the President of City Council is the first in the line of succession in the event the mayor is removed from office."

On Sunday, Shabazz was sworn in by a councilmember as the city's next mayor.
