A gun belonging to Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto was stolen when his vehicle was burglarized in central Metairie overnight, according to the department.

The sheriff's car was one of several hit in a rash of burglaries reported Friday morning central Metairie, according to Sgt. Brandon Veal, spokesperson for the department.

The firearm had not been recovered and suspect had been arrested in the case as of Friday afternoon.

Investigators don't believe Lopinto was intentionally targeted because he is the sheriff, Veal said. Instead, they suspect his vehicle, which was parked at his residence, was one of many burglarized that night.

The case is still under investigation.
