FENTON — A few observations from the Class 3 girls soccer state semifinals, played Friday at Soccer Park.

St. Joseph's beat Helias 5-0 in the opening semifinal, and Fort Zumwalt South topped Notre Dame de Sion 4-1 in the second.

Fort Zumwalt South (18-5-1) and St. Joseph's (17-3-2) advanced to play in the title game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Black eye equals hat trick

Fort Zumwalt South sniper Brielle Gilbert figured there was only one way to respond to a wayward elbow to the face.

The multi-talented sophomore answered the blow with three successive goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 4-1 win over Notre Dame de Sion.

Gilbert has quickly become the face of the Bulldogs with a team-high 22 goals. That face was a little battered up after Gilbert took an elbow early in the match.
