Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a law requiring schools to show 5th to 12th grade students videos of fetal development that depict "the humanity of the unborn child."

The law forbids schools from using any materials created by an organization that performs or promotes abortions, or makes referrals to abortion providers.

Republicans have said the law "brings humanity into the classroom," while Democrats say it will ban curriculum developed by medical institutions like the Mayo Clinic.

Beginning this fall, Iowa schools must show middle and high school students a video of fetal development that "depicts the humanity of the unborn child," under a law Gov. Kim Reynolds signed June 6.

Reynolds, a Republican, announced the signing without comment in an afternoon news release on Friday, June 6.
