An apartment building rooftop fire sent a plume of smoke over Capitol Hill on Friday afternoon, drawing a large firefighter response.

The fire in the 100 block of 10th Avenue East broke out around 2:15 p.m. Firefighters got onto the roof of the building and started hosing down the flames.

About 15 minutes later, the Seattle Fire Department said the incident was “under control.”

The department did not immediately say whether there were any injuries.

A gaggle of first and second graders from the nearby Seattle Amistad School cheered firefighters on from across the street. The group had spent the day at a beach in Madison Park and were taking the 11 bus back when they were forced to stop and get off because of the wall of firetrucks, said Deborah Purce, a parent volunteer.
