OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - It was an act of respect and honor that led Marion County Veterans Council President Charles Calhoun to change the unclaimed veteran’s final resting place.

“We do so much for the veterans but there’s a segment that’s fallen through the cracks, and that’s the unclaimed veterans,” said Calhoun.

Calhoun says he approached volunteers with the “On Top of the World” Woodshop about the idea of creating wooden urns.

He says once he saw what was being used for unclaimed veterans before, he knew he had to take action.

“At the very first ceremony that we did, the funeral home came to me with a cardboard box. It was all crumbled up and it just broke my heart,” said Calhoun.
