MILLINOCKET -- Nearly two decades after the closure of a prominent northern Maine paper mill public and private entities are working to bring life back into its community by converting the old mill site into a salmon farm.
On Friday, June 6, state and national leaders were given a tour of the former Great Northern Paper Mill site. Where in a few years time, 27 acres of the site will become a salmon farm.
According to board member Jessica Masse, the mill site was purchased by the local nonprofit Our Katahdin, "for a dollar" and renamed it to One North.
According to the nonprofit, there are two lease holders on the site. Construction is well underway for Great Northern Salmon's aquaculture facility.
According to Masse, the greenfield area of the mill site will be home to Castlerock Bio
