Neyla Pekarek, a Grammy-nominated cellist and vocalist, is set to perform at the Centennial Village Museum for a 100th anniversary celebration of “Rattlesnake Kate” at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the museum, 1475 A St., Greeley.

Pekarek is a former University of Northern Colorado student and a former member of the group The Lumineers. While at UNC, Pekarek learned Rattlesnake Kate’s story.

In 1925, Kate McHale Slaughterback was riding horses with her 3-year-old son, Ernie, near a lake near her farm in Hudson.

According to legend, she heard what she thought were hunters. However, when Slaughterback investigated, she saw migrating rattlesnakes. She shot at them until she ran out of bullets, but that only made things worse. Soon, the mother and son were surrounded by the snakes. She then
