SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A unique project to support native plant growth, attract local wildlife and enhance water quality is launching in Sioux Falls.

The floating eco-islands are a collaboration between CNH and Friends of the Big Sioux River.

They are 6-foot-by7-foot platforms made out of PVC pipe filled with native plants.

As the plants grow, their roots will begin to dangle below the island panels, and they will receive the nutrients they need from the water.

The deep root system of these native plant species will allow them to help filter and clean the water.

The pilot project was installed at Covell Lake, near Terrace Park, in Sioux Falls.
