WEST FARGO, N.D. — Friday, June 6 is National Donut Day, a celebration of one of America’s favorite breakfast treats — and a day that also honors a piece of military history.
National Donut Day was established in 1938 to recognize The Salvation Army’s efforts during World War I, when volunteers served donuts to soldiers on the frontlines as a comfort meal.
To continue that tradition, Sandy’s Donuts donated $3 to The Salvation Army for every dozen donuts sold.
The day has become one of the busiest of the year for Sandy’s.
"Last night, we made over 26,000 donuts and sold just about all of them. We still have a few left, but it was an absolutely insane day," said Jeff Ostlund, owner and CEO of Sandy’s Donuts.
