OELWEIN, Iowa (KCRG) - Many bicyclists stopped in Oelwein on Friday as a part of the “pre-ride”. One of them being the ride director of RAGBRAI. And Oelwein is his birthplace and home town. Which means this pre-ride means that much more to him.

“It’s very surreal to be back to those spots, I’ve been gone for a long time and a lot of memories come right back,” said RAGBRAI Ride Director Matt Phippen.

Both the city of Oelwein and Phippen feel a sense of pride having this place as an overnight stop. It’s the first time that’s happened since 2002.

This year’s theme is “Duck, Duck, Viaduct” as riders travel in under the bridge.
