KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Nonprofits across the country rely on donations to keep funding the services they offer, but a recent donation to an East Tennessee organization raised some concerns and questions.

Cancer Support Community East Tennessee could have been the victim of an overpayment scam had a staff member not noticed, and this scam is not that uncommon.

Jennifer Harrell, with Cancer Support Community, said the nonprofit relies on donations to offer free services to people who have cancer and their families.

"Anything that we offer, whether that be an education program, a nutrition class, talking about one of the latest treatment options from a doctor or a pharmacist, all of those services support groups are led by professionals, are provided for free," Harrell said.
