After 72 years of wear beat them past repair, Helena city commissioners approved a $620,000 project to redo the Kay McKenna Park Tennis Courts.

“The asphalt base is decomposing and deteriorating,” Parks Superintendent Craig Marr told commissioners Monday.

The tennis courts at 740 Getchell St. were constructed in 1953, and a lifetime later, cracks and holes scar the asphalt subsurface.

The city paused tennis and pickleball lessons, and guests are recommended to stay off the courts or risk injury, city documents state.

With reconstruction overdue, Helena worked with Triple Tree Engineering to create a replacement plan.

The new courts will be a complete overhaul, demolishing the concrete, sidewalks, stairs and chain-link fence to make room for replacements. The final courts will be 28,51
