ORONO - The University of Maine is once again the host of one of the best sporting events of the summer, as Special Olympics Maine kicked off their 2025 Summer Games with the Opening Ceremonies on Friday.

The Summer Games run from Friday through Sunday morning where closing ceremonies are set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

The games are expected to bring thousands of people to Orono and the Greater Bangor area, including over 2,000 athletes and coaches from every county in Maine.

Athletes range from 7-to-70 years old and compete in games like bocce, softball, track and field events and more. The Summer Games are not only a culmination of months of hard work and training by the athletes, they are a celebration of friendship, health, community, and more.
