AUSTIN, Texas — CapMetro has introduced new faces to protect and serve on its public transits.
On Friday, the agency swore in 12 officers that include nine transit officers, two sergeants and a police captain as part of its first-ever police department.
Last year, CapMetro received certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), allowing the agency to recruit officers.
"The safety of our system every day is our very top priority," CapMetro CEO and President Dottie Watkins said during the ceremony.
Watkins said the idea for a CapMetro Police Department has been on their mind for decades, but after direct feedback from staff and community members, it was time to bring the officers in.
The priority is to build the department from the ground up and start with five to s
