A Brandon judge denied bail for a man who the judge said has an unbroken record of criminal involvement for more than 35 years.

“Frankly, he’s unwilling or incapable, it seems, to stay out of criminal trouble,” Manitoba Associate Chief Judge Donovan Dvorak said. “It seems to be a lifestyle.”

Garfield Chartrand, 48, applied for bail in Brandon provincial court on Thursday afternoon after he was caught breaching three release orders on June 1.

Crown attorney Colin Standish said Chartrand has a number of pending charges, which he detailed in court.

On Aug. 6, 2024, Chartrand was allegedly involved in a sexual assault that took place on Princess Avenue at around 10:30 a.m., Standish said.
