A 46-year-old man was booked on felony aggravated assault charges after a traffic stop in north Phoenix escalated into a fight and shooting involving a police officer.

Phoenix police say Sam Perone was taken into custody after being released from the hospital, following an altercation in which he argued with and assaulted Officer Michael Ugalde-Flores during a traffic stop near 25th Street and Cactus Road.

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. on May 25, when Officer Ugalde-Flores observed Sam Perone committing a traffic violation on Cactus Road. Before the officer could park his patrol car, Perone exited his vehicle and began arguing, according to Phoenix Police Sergeant Brian Bower.
