SAULT STE. MARIE — Work on the Carbide Dock is finished and it welcomed in the ninth of 50 cruise ships scheduled to visit the historic city Friday.
The 665-foot long Viking Octantis, its 350 passengers and 50 crew members, spent most of the day in the Soo. The cruise ship is one of the two largest vessels that will visit this season. We are told cruise ships brought in a half-million dollars to the local economy in 2023.
The Carbide Dock project was first approved by the city back in 2017. The total cost was around $35 million.
While there is some electrical work and landscaping work to be done this summer, the most important thing was to get the actual dock completed for the large cruise ships.
