MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -A Dane County Sheriff’s Office sergeant is creating history and inspiring others to strive for greatness.

Shuntia Lucas is the African American woman to be promoted to the rank of sergeant in the history of the sheriff’s office.

“I’m very excited about the promotion,” Sgt. Lucas said. “It’s a step in the right direction and I’m very excited to be a role model and show the diversity that the Dane County Sheriff’s Office has here.”

She was inspired to work in law enforcement because of her high school track coach, who later became her mentor.
