GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - The federal appeals court has given its ruling on the death of 3-month-old La’Mello Parker.

In May 2021, La’Mello was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between his father, Eric Smith, and Coast law enforcers. The violent confrontation unfolded on I-10 in Harrison County just hours after Smith was named a suspect in a double murder in Louisiana and kidnapped La’Mello. Both La’Mello and Smith died during the shootout.

In April 2022, a grand jury cleared law enforcers of wrongdoing in La’Mello’s death, but his family sued, alleging constitutional violations.
