NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Three weeks after 10 inmates broke out of the Orleans Justice Center, community advocates are shifting their focus to the problems that contributed to the jailbreak.
“While it’s obviously critical to catch the remaining two inmates, the question we need to be asking now is systemically, what went wrong?” said Michael Hecht, president of the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed an executive order late last month mandating an investigation of the jail and its surrounding processes.
Hecht works with the NOLA Coalition, a community group comprising nearly 200 citywide organizations that address quality-of-life issues in the city. He announced Thursday that he fully supports the governor’s order to audit jail operations.
