A former Columbia Second Ward councilperson has endorsed Vera Elwood for the seat.

Andrea Waner, who represented the Second Ward from 2021 to 2024 and served as mayor pro tem, gave her endorsement for Elwood on Friday.

Elwood and Ken Rice will vie for the open Second Ward seat in an Aug. 5 special election. Lisa Meyer previously held the seat and resigned from the Columbia City Council due to health reasons.

Waner praised Elwood's character and leadership in a news release.

"When I knocked doors during my run, neighbors told me they wanted someone smart, steady, and serious about the work — someone who listened and led with heart," Waner said in the release.
