MERIDEN, Conn. — A high school senior in the Meriden Public Schools district was recently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

Mark Benigni, superintendent of Meriden Public Schools, said it was reported to the district that the 12th-grade student had been detained at a Hartford immigration hearing.

According to Benigni, ICE has not contacted the district or any of its schools. The superintendent was limited in what he could say but promised that all students who have earned a diploma will receive one.

“While I cannot share details about specific students, I can assure you that students who meet all of the Meriden Public Schools graduation requirements will be issued a diploma from the Meriden Board of Education,” Benigni said.
