As always under current VHSL bracketing, Hampton Roads will produce an entrant in the state Class 5 championship match.

But unlike usual, it won’t be a team from Virginia Beach. Instead, Maury and Hickory showed why they have been dominant teams this season, winning quarterfinals Friday at home to advance to a semifinal against each other at 9 a.m. Monday on Hickory’s courts in Chesapeake.

Unbeaten Maury swept the top four singles matches with Region B champion John Felts, Manolo Angeles, Johnny March and Jack Wynne to defeat Ocean Lakes 5-2 on the Commodores’ new courts in Norfolk. March and Drew Nottingham won 6-1, 6-0 on doubles line 2 for the clincher, and Felts and Angeles — the Region B doubles champs — were leading 6-0, 5-0 before the match was stopped.
