The last time Urbandale boys soccer won a state title in 2002, none of the current players were even born.
Even the J-Hawks' opponent in the 2025 Class 3A Iowa high school boys state soccer title game , Iowa City Liberty, was still 15 years from opening its doors as a school. And on June 6, it was Urbandale that emerged victorious at Mediacom Stadium in a 1-0 win over the Lightning.
The J-Hawks only needed one, and it came from perhaps one of the most unexpected places. Sophomore Brice Lumley found the back of the net early in the seventh minute of the contest. Lumley's shot rolled past the goalkeeper, off the right post and in to take a 1-0 advantage. It was the sophomore midfielder's first goal of his high school career, which gave Urbandale the lead headed into the half.
